The
Sterling Prophecy
The football soared far and high, angling into the dense
forest stretching along the field that several boys were currently fighting it
out over a football. Which was now in
the air, and two of the boys were chasing it.
Each running as hard and as fast as they could, but all the while weaving
trying to cut the other off.
One of them, Abraham Johnson, who was splattered with mud,
was lagging just behind his best friend.
Jason Sterling, stretched his long legs and covered more
distance than Abraham. He too was
splashed in filth; but neither paid attention to their appearance; when they
were startled out of their attention by a bark.
Jason groaned, " Frodo!
Down! Stop. "
But their attempts were in vain, and the big black hairball
of a dog had snuck around from where he had been laying in the grass. Now he had officially sunk his teeth into the
leather , he playfully growled and took off into the forest. Shouting to their companions to stay put, the
two friends sighed and gave chase to the dog.
*************
Twenty minutes later found them no closer to their object,
their quarry was teasing them. Giving
them a chance to catch up, but then
leaping up and out of their reach. By
now they were thoroughly covered in mud, and could easily make a suit of the
leaves stuck to their clothes.
Finally, after totally ignoring his masters calls,
pleadings, and threats, Frodo flopped down tired of the game. Abraham and Jason approached cautiously,
fearing that he might be tricking them.
But seeing that he had no intentions of escaping, they slowly loosened the slightly deflated football from his jaws; and soon
they too plopped down.
Finally stirring themselves, Jason spoke to the others, “ We
should probably start heading back before the guys start wondering if we got
lost. We don’t need a search party for
people who aren’t lost.”
Abraham grinned a lopsided grin, “Why not? It would give us a chance to return the favor
after chasing Edward’s football down.”
Jason came over and
helped his friend up, “You know that’s not right, Ab. But, we could just take a long way home.” He winked.
Abraham laughed, and the two of them trotted home with Frodo
running beside them. But they hadn’t
proceeded two minutes down the path, or what they thought was the path, when
all three of them suddenly plummeted downwards. Surprised barks and yells issued from the
trio’s mouths.
They seemed to fall forever, it was actually upwards of fifteen minutes, but
just as suddenly as it started, they flumped down onto a hard wood floor. Polished and well oiled, it seemed to be
rocking back and forth. Jason and
Abraham looked around.
“That’s gonna leave a mark.” Declared Abraham, rubbing his
backside.
Jason nodded in agreement, and moved to what seemed to be
the outline of a door. He pushed on it,
but when it didn’t budge, he raised one foot and made contact with the door
knocking it off it’s hinges. He grinned proudly and stepped outside, Abraham
and Frodo stepped out right next to him.
They had to take a double take…
They were on a ship. But when
they glanced up at the mast, they knew what kind of ship it was. It was a pirate ship.
