"Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David 2 and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there. 3 I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”
4 Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. 5 He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?” 1 Samuel 19: 1-5.
Here we see Jonathan and David's relationship. A very promising relationship. Personally, I think this is one of the most holy relationships in the Bible. This is a perfect example of brotherly love. You would be hard put to find another example as good as this one.
Jonathan and David probably met in the first days of David being at court. We don't know how, but this would probably have been one of the most likeliest times to meet. Here we see Jonathan defending David from his own father. How hard would that be? To stand against one of your own kin to defend someone, who you may have only just met a few weeks previous. There was an immediate connection from between the two.
This subject could be expounded about, but really it comes down to this. God took this opportunity to give David a champion in the court of Saul. Which David would return the favor in the coming years, by defending Jonathan's descendants. Many biblical scholars now think that Jonathan was much older than David, then this relationship was more than just brotherhood. Jonathan was that father figure that David didn't have around him at that time. Jonathan was a living example of wisdom, love, and protection for David.
