The Door Between Worlds Prelude

Jason and Abraham stepped out from the forest and moved across the clearing, heading for the gravel road just ahead.  The early morning sunlight poured through the trees that were stretching over the glade that they had played football in months earlier.

"Well, old friend, we're back to where we started."  Jason grinned and turned to his companion, who was looking around the area with an air of one trying to grasp at a memory that was eluding him.

Ab broke into a toothy smile, "Finally.  It feels like it's been forever."

"Well, it's been almost six months since we were last here."

"And to think that you almost got married!"  Abraham said laughingly.

The change in Jason's attitude was swift.  From one of pure joy of being home to missing the one who he had grown to love and would never see again.  Abraham hastened to change his answer, "I'm sorry, mate.  You know I didn't mean it like that."

When Jason still looked slightly sad, he continued, "Frodo wouldn't have wanted you to be this downcast.  He would've wanted you to enjoy this moment.  You're home, Jas.  Act like it."  Ab punched his shoulder.

Jason rearranged his face into a smile, "Alright.  As long as you promise you stop trying to comfort me..  You're pretty bad at it."

Grinning broadly the pair of them turned up the gravel road to their hometown of Leafage, Washington.  The wanderers had finally returned home.  They had suffered pain, and they had experienced happiness.  They had exchanged blows with death, and they had seen miracles.  They lost loved ones, and had experienced love.  But now they had returned, and they could finally knock on their doors to see their families' faces light up with the joy of knowing that they were alive.

The duo turned left on River-Way, they were finally in the home-stretch.  They would finally be able to rest from their adventures, but what they didn't know is that it was just the beginning.
