Mission Impossible Day One: Letters From War

Earlier this summer, my sister came across an old box while we were cleaning out my grandma's garage.  In this old box were time-worn letters.  Letters from an old relative who fought in WWI.  Some of the earliest letters date back to 1914.  Needless to say, it was quite the discovery.  So, we spent some time passing them around and reading them.  But, I think, what also interested us was who he was writing too, and trying to piece them together on our family tree.

Family.  Genealogies.  Ancestries.  Where we came from.  Who we are.  What the deeds and accomplishments of our forefathers are.

These are all things that we ponder at one time.  So why this fascination?  Why are we so curious about where we've come from?

"Whoever troubles his own household will inherit the wind, and the fool will be a servant to the wise of heart."  (Proverbs 11:29)

"Honor your father and your mother, that the days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."  (Exodus 20:12)

Despite what many people say, family defines us.  They are the one's who know our strengths and weaknesses.  They know how to build us up and tear us down.  They are our diving board into the world, and our cornerstone for how we start our own families.  That is why family is so important.   A strong family is the recipe for success. But yet our culture fails to recognize how important it truly is.  This has propelled us to where we are today.  The emphasis on family has decreased with every decade.  Why do you think there is entire chapters and pages devoted to genealogies in the Bible?  It's because it is important to know where we came from.

Just as our flesh and blood family is there for us, our Christian family will surround us for all eternity.  We are built on the greatest Cornerstone ever, and we have an all-powerful and loving Father in God.  With a family that spans distance and time itself, what should we fear?
