What's To Be Done Now?

To celebrate the beginning of Thanksgiving break, some fellow freshmen and I hiked up a bluff called "Spud Hill."  We specifically climbed it so that we could watch the sunset.  The sunset. was. magnificent.  Saturday was an overcast day, but we still held out hope for a sunset.  When the sun sunk below the horizon, everything seemed to slow down.. it painted the entire Palouse gold.  The light enveloped the hills opposite us in a dark purplish hue.  In their last hour, the rays of the sun made one last valiant attempt to show off the handiwork of the Creator.  I must admit, they did not disappoint.

As I sit here, remembering the hike, it reassures me.  This last term, in Lordship, we have been discussing how creation is a means of communion with the Lord.  Another means of receiving His grace.  That day was a great reminder of who is in control: "For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made."  (Romans 1:20, ESV,).

A week and a half ago, we found out who our future president would be.  In the campaign leading up to the election, anxiety seemed to be at an all time high in our nation.  And I don't think it has much abated since then.  Whether you are of the left or the right, the whole nation seems to be sitting on the edge of its' seat.  But we need to remember something:  "Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases."  (Psalm 115:3)

We seem to forget who really is in control.  That there is someone who is possibly more powerful than the President seems to slip by unnoticed.   Which, if the case was that there was no one above the President, I could understand why this would cause fear, trembling, and gnashing of teeth.  But when there is Someone who is infinitely more wise and loving than our rulers, that gives me a confidence that can't be earned by anyone here on earth.

Now, I must qualify this.  This does not give Christians the excuse to assume a defeatist or reserved attitude.  On the contrary, we should be confident of the hope that is in us.  For our Kingdom shall never pass away: "..and behold, with the clouds of the heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.  And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed."  (Daniel 7: 13-14)

There is no reason to be anxious, for He has already won.  So live like it.
